A Little Bit About Us
Portage APL is a private, nonprofit humane society that is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption of animals from various situations. Portage APL helps animals and people.
We provide humane law enforcement services for all of Portage County. We can investigate reports of cruelty, neglect and abandonment, remove animals when necessary and file charges against those whose infractions are in violation of the law. We take sick and injured stray animals regularly and even have a staff person available after hours to respond to life-threatening emergencies. We take animals in from owners when space allows. We also transfer animals in from other overcrowded shelters when possible.
We provide low-cost spay and neuter services (through a mobile unit) for community cats and also have a food program for those in need of assistance with pet food. Each animal is spayed /neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, given flea and worm preventative, tested for Heartworm (dogs) and Felv/FIV (cats) prior to adoption.
Those are just the basics. Because of our work with cruelty and emergency cases, we often have large veterinary bills for things like Heartworm treatment, or leg, eye, skin, and other injuries, as well as life-saving procedures for animals that have been hit by cars, are giving birth, or have illnesses.
This work is only possible through generous donations. Especially now, our budget is taking a hit and our work needs to continue. Kitten season, cruelty, injury or homelessness doesn't stop because of COVID-19.
