{The Lieutenant Mario Bastidas Bike Ride will be postponed till at least the end of the Summer, or possibly next Spring due to the Covid 19)
The Memorial Glade at WTC Is dedicated to all those who were injured, sickened and died long after September 11 2001 from exposure to the hazards and toxins at or near the site at Ground Zero.
Lieutenant Mario Bastidas { Super Mario} began his career as an EMT at NYC EMS in 1989. Mario excelled in his career at EMS due to the empathy, kindness, generosity, and nurturing attitude he demonstrated towards his patients, co-workers, friends & family{ basically anyone he met}. It was these traits that motivated him and nourished his ambitions of becoming a Paramedic. In his exemplary role as a Paramedic he excelled and in 2010, Mario was promoted to Lieutenant.
When the World Trade Center ( WTC) was attacked On September 11, 2001, without hesitation, Mario along with thousands of other first responders went to the scene of the attack. He worked tirelessly at ground zero for months during the rescue and recovery period.
In June of 2011 he was diagnosed with cancer and on April 1, 2017 he lost his battle with the disease. Mario left behind a beloved wife Penelope, his two furry children Stone & Seamus, and a multitude of beloved family and friends.
This Mario Bastidas Memorial Bicycle Ride is to honor our brothers and sisters who we lost that fateful day in 2001 and to remember that more and more first responders and civilians are being diagnosed with ailments directly related to the attack on the WTC. We all lost something that day and many of us are still suffering. Some ailments are noticeable, but there are many conditions that can easily go undetected.
We will ride to and from Fort Totten to the WTC by bicycle. There will be a memorial service held at the Glades on the site of the WTC.
