About Waste Not Want Not
Waste Not Want Not has been connecting the dots between surplus food and hungry people in Northeast Florida for 30 years. Founded in 1990, Waste Not Want Not exists because no one should go hungry while good food goes to waste. Waste Not’s mission is simple—to prevent the discarding of food and other items that can be used to fight hunger and poverty in our community. Waste Not’s volunteers rescue 4000 to 7000 pounds of food by 10 am every day, food that would otherwise be wasted. They deliver rescued baked goods, meat, produce, eggs and dairy, cooked foods, and drinks to their building using their own vehicles to rescue from stores and restaurants, and Waste Not’s box truck to rescue the larger donations from vendors’ warehouses. Waste Not volunteers distribute the rescued food to 2,200 people every day, people who would otherwise struggle to put food on the table. The food is typically gone the same day it is rescued, on its way to feed people served by soup kitchens, missions, food pantries, after-school and weekend backpack programs, group homes, and various other nonprofits in 10 counties. Last year, Waste Not Want Not rescued and distributed more than 2 million pounds of food.
