We are heartbroken by the murder of eight people in Atlanta, six of them Asian and Asian American women. We mourn their deaths and grieve with their families. The violence targeting Asian and Asian American women is not new, and for so many of us experiences of sexism and racism are painfully familiar. We are a group of scholars, artists, and activists drawn to the transformative potentials of BTS, including the ways that communities of fans have organized against racism and gender-based violence of all forms. The Atlanta attacks illuminate transpacific legacies of militarized violence that BTS scholarship urges us to reflect on more deeply. As we move forward with this conference we remain firm in our resolve to promote education, activism, and arts that share our commitment to social justice and radical politics of care. Please read the statements and consult the resources below for more context regarding the legacies of hate and anti-Asian violence at the root of the Atlanta and so many other attacks.
